The ideal time for trekking is during the dry season, from May to August, which offers clearer skies. While days are usually warm, nights can be quite cold. We can provide supplemental oxygen if needed, and in case of severe issues, an emergency helicopter evacuation is possible (ensure you have appropriate travel insurance). Please note that there are no refunds if you need to end your trek early.

Will I be dropped off at my hotel at the end of the trek?
Of course! Return transportation to your hotel is included in the trekking package, ensuring a perfect conclusion to your adventure. For those staying in the Sacred Valley, such as Ollantaytambo or Urubamba, we offer transfers for an additional $50.

Can I change the departure date once tickets are purchased?
Absolutely! You can change your plans if necessary. Contact us immediately to coordinate any date changes. Remember, tickets are non-transferable and non-refundable, and if you cancel, you’ll forfeit your deposit.

Can I get altitude sickness during the 6-day Ausangate Trek?
It’s possible, but with proper preparation, most people who exercise regularly adjust well to the altitude in Cusco or the Sacred Valley within 24 to 48 hours. Stay hydrated, drink coca tea, and use oxygen if needed. Our guides are trained to help with any altitude-related challenges.

How many people are in each group?
We limit our group size to a maximum of 10 participants, with most groups having between 2 and 6 hikers. Our small, private group approach ensures a personalized adventure that fully embraces the magic of the Andes.

These essentials will enhance your experience and prepare you for the wonders of the trek.

History of Ausangate

Ausangate, known as Awsanqati in Quechua, is the highest mountain in the Cusco region and the fifth highest in the Andes, standing at 6,385 meters (20,948 feet). Located about 100 kilometers southeast of Cusco, it is part of the Vilcanota mountain range and offers breathtaking landscapes, pristine rivers, glacial lakes, and waterfalls.

In Inca mythology, Ausangate holds a central role as the origin of masculine energy that nourishes Pachamama or Mother Earth. The waters of Ausangate flow down to the Amazon and return at night to refill lakes and glaciers, transforming into the celestial river Willkamayu—or the Milky Way in Western terms.

Each year, in the northern part of Ausangate, before Corpus Christi, the Qoyllur Rit’i (Starry Snow) festival is held. Thousands of Quechua people embark on a pilgrimage to honor the Lord of Quyllur Rit’i at the Sinakara temple, where a sacred rock painting is kept.
