Don’t forget a first aid kit, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a reusable water bottle.
  • Stay Hydrated & Eat Well: Hydration is vital at high altitude. Drink at least 2 to 3 liters of water daily. Energy snacks like nuts, dried fruits, and energy bars will help you stay energized during demanding hikes.

How difficult is the 6-day Ausangate Rainbow Mountain trek?
Preparing for a trek in Cusco means understanding the challenge of high altitude and rugged trails. We rate this trek as moderate to challenging. Altitude is the main challenge, with three passes over 5,000 m (16,404 ft), so acclimatization is key. Rest assured, the ascents and descents are generally gentler than those on the famous Inca Trail.

When is the best time of year to do the 6-day Ausangate Rainbow Mountain Trek?
The ideal trekking season is the dry season from May to August, which offers clearer skies. Days tend to be warm but nights can be quite cold. The rainy season from December to March poses significant safety risks due to snow and rain at high altitude. Trekking in April, September, or October depends heavily on weather conditions.

What are the average hiking hours per day?
Prepare for an exciting daily journey of 6 to 8 hours on the Ausangate trek. We guarantee a comfortable pace with plenty of breaks to rest, snack, and recharge with lunch. For specific daily plans, refer to the detailed itinerary we provide.

Who will be traveling with me?
Experience camaraderie with a diverse group of adventurers from around the world. While group details remain confidential, prepare to share the trail with an exciting mix of fellow travelers eager for adventure.

Do I really need a trekking guide?

We have oxygen available for respiratory problems and can arrange helicopter evacuation if necessary (make sure you have proper travel insurance). Please note that no refunds are given if you end your trek early.

Will I be dropped off at my hotel at the end of the trek?
Of course! Return transfers to your hotel are included in the trekking package, ensuring a perfect end to your adventure. For those staying in the Sacred Valley (like Ollantaytambo or Urubamba), transfers are available for an additional $50.

Can I change my departure date after purchasing tickets?
You can adjust your plans if needed. Contact us immediately to arrange any date changes. Keep in mind tickets are non-transferable and non-refundable, and canceling will forfeit your deposit.

Can I suffer from altitude sickness during the 6-day Ausangate Rainbow Mountain trek?
It’s possible, but with proper preparation, most physically active people acclimatize well in Cusco or the Sacred Valley after a few days. Acclimatization typically takes 24 to 48 hours. Stay hydrated, drink coca tea, and use oxygen if needed; our guides are trained to assist with altitude challenges.

How many people are in each group?
We limit group sizes to a maximum of 10 participants, with most groups ranging from 2 to 6 trekkers. Our focus on small, private groups ensures a personalized adventure that lets you fully enjoy the magic of the Andes.

Is it necessary to hire a saddle horse?
A saddle horse is a useful option to help you reach the higher passes if you need extra support. There is an additional charge covering both the horse and rider.

What should I pack for the 6-day Ausangate Rainbow Mountain trek?
Packing smart is crucial! Consider sturdy, breathable hiking footwear and layered clothing: moisture-wicking base layers, insulating mid-layers, and waterproof outer layers for variable weather. A hat, sunscreen, reusable water container, and a small backpack for snacks, cameras, and personal items are also good choices. These essentials will enhance your experience and prepare you for the trek’s wonders.

What training and fitness levels are recommended for the trek?
Tackling the 6-day Ausangate trek requires good fitness since you’ll hike long days at high altitude. Start a 6- to 8-week training regimen including cardiovascular exercise like brisk walking, jogging, or cycling for 30 minutes to an hour. Add strength and endurance workouts. This preparation boosts your fitness and confidence, readying you for the landscapes and cultural experiences ahead. It’s not just a physical test but a rewarding encounter with nature and culture.

History of Ausangate
Ausangate, known as Awsanqati in Quechua, is the highest mountain in Cusco and the fifth highest in the Andes, standing at 6385 meters (20,948 feet). Located about 100 kilometers southeast of Cusco, it is part of the Vilcanota mountain range and offers breathtaking landscapes, crystal-clear rivers, glacial lagoons, and waterfalls.

In Inca mythology, Ausangate is vital as the origin of the masculine energy that nourishes Pachamama or Mother Earth. The waters from Ausangate travel to the Amazon and return at night to replenish lakes and glaciers, becoming the celestial river Willkamayu, or the Milky Way in Western terms.

Every year, on the northern slope of Ausangate, the Qoyllur Rit’i festival or “Star Snow” takes place before Corpus Christi. Thousands of Quechua pilgrims journey to honor the Lord of Quyllur Rit’i at the Sinakara temple, with its sacred rock painting, a pilgrimage declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
