Upon arrival at Cusco airport, we will meet you with a sign featuring your name for a transfer to your selected hotel. At the hotel, you’ll have a cup of the famous coca tea, which helps combat altitude sickness (Cusco is at 3,400m/11,154ft). Day 2: Cusco to Ollantaytambo – Sacred Valley Tour
On day 2, your Inca Trail tour package will begin with a hearty breakfast at the hotel. We’ll pick you up at 7:30 AM to start by visiting the Pisac archaeological center, located 45 minutes from Cusco. Pisac reveals the advanced Incan knowledge of architecture and other constructions. Studies show it wasn’t a fortress but a royal estate belonging to Inca Pachacutec, featuring agricultural terraces, domestic and ceremonial structures, and aqueducts for irrigation. Also, the Pisac craft market is a must-see for authentic souvenirs.

Afterward, we will drive through the Sacred Valley, with its picturesque mountain views. At noon, we’ll stop in Urubamba for a buffet lunch, showcasing Peru’s culinary excellence. Urubamba was one of the Inca Empire’s major agricultural hubs. The area produces the world’s best corn and a variety of local fruits during the rainy season.

In the afternoon, we’ll visit the Ollantaytambo fortress, an important military, agricultural, and religious center for managing and controlling the Sacred Valley. The archaeological site features large, intricately carved stones on the upper terrace, providing breathtaking views of the valley.

This concludes the day’s tour, and you’ll have free time to purchase some Inca Trail supplies.

Essential Information for the Best 7-Day Inca Trail Package

Arrival in Cusco

When planning your arrival in Cusco, the starting point of the iconic 7-day Inca Trail package, it’s important to take logistical factors into account. Currently, Cusco’s airport only serves domestic flights, meaning international travelers must land in Lima, go through customs, and retrieve and recheck their luggage, even if the next flight to Cusco is on the same day and with the same airline.

Despite these extra steps, flying to Cusco is still the most comfortable option, with several airlines offering the service. LAN is a notable option, although it’s more expensive than others, with a wide range of flight schedules. However, be prepared for possible delays or cancellations due to Cusco’s high altitude, which can sometimes delay landings, especially during adverse weather conditions.

As an alternative, you can also consider traveling by bus. Though it takes longer, the trip is comfortable and convenient. From Lima, the bus ride to Cusco takes about 20 hours, making it a great option for those traveling from cities closer to Cusco, like Puno, as it is both affordable and comfortable.

Instructions

All briefing sessions are held at our office at 6:30 PM the night before your trek. If you cannot attend the briefing, it is essential to coordinate an alternative schedule with a representative of the SUNRISE PERU TREK Travel & Tours office. These sessions typically last 30 to 45 minutes. During the briefing, you will be given your duffel bags to prepare for your expedition.

The team will review important details of the trek, including the route, altitude, weather conditions, and safety precautions. We strongly recommend that all trekkers attend these sessions to ensure a smooth and enjoyable hike.

Duffel Bags for Inca Trail Package

To help prepare for your adventure, you will receive duffel bags at the briefing session. These are not just any bags – they measure 66 cm long and 36 cm wide, providing ample space for everything you need. Don’t worry about carrying them; our diligent porters will take care of that. They will ensure your belongings are safely transported to each campsite.

Each duffel bag has a weight limit of 7 kg. We recommend reserving 4 kg for your clothing and personal items, and the remaining 3 kg for your sleeping bag and mat, which are essential for a comfortable rest under the stars. Pack thoughtfully and get ready to embark on your journey with confidence and comfort!

Return to Cusco from Machu Picchu

Your return to Cusco from Machu Picchu involves a few logistical steps as part of your tour package:

  1. Bus from Machu Picchu to Aguas Calientes:
    • Duration: 25 minutes
    • Buses operate on a first-come, first-served basis, running throughout the day.
  2. Train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo or Poroy:
    • Your guide will provide train tickets and departure schedules.
    • Arrive at the platform 30 minutes before departure.
    • Train ride duration: 2 hours from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo.
  3. Arrival at the Train Station:
    • Look for someone in a blue uniform carrying an SPT Travel & Tours sign.
    • They will escort you to San Francisco Square in Cusco.
    • Duration of van ride from Ollantaytambo to San Francisco Square: 2 hours.

Machu Picchu Entry Time

Machu Picchu, a UNESCO World Heritage site, now offers two distinct visiting sessions to manage tourist influx and protect the integrity of the site. Visitors can choose between the morning session (from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM) or the afternoon session (from 12:00 PM to 5:30 PM). Please note that your ticket is only valid for one session, and after your session ends, the rangers will kindly ask you to leave. Whether you prefer an early morning visit to witness the breathtaking sunrise or a relaxing afternoon to soak in the spectacular scenery, Machu Picchu welcomes you to experience its majestic beauty.

Health & Safety

Your health is of utmost importance to us. If you have any health concerns or conditions, please communicate them to your guide. While our guides are not medical professionals, they are trained in first aid. Additionally, we have partnered with a clinic in Cusco that can provide medical assistance if necessary.

It is your responsibility to determine if this tour is suitable for you. We strongly recommend consulting with your doctor to confirm your fitness for travel and participation in the activities planned. Additionally, check with your doctor regarding vaccinations and medical precautions, as SPT Travel & Tours is not authorized to provide medical advice. You must evaluate the risks and requirements for each aspect of the tour based on your individual health, limitations, fitness level, and medical needs.

In case of severe altitude sickness or other illness preventing you from continuing the hike, we can assist with organizing an alternative travel plan to Machu Picchu by train. Please be aware that this might incur additional costs, but we will strive to keep the original itinerary to minimize expenses.

Should you have any difficulty during the trek, a porter will accompany you to the nearest road while arrangements are made for transportation to the nearest health center.

Group Tours

Participating in a 7-day group tour on the Inca Trail provides a unique opportunity to connect with people from diverse backgrounds and hiking abilities. While everyone has their own pace—some faster, some slower—the beauty of the journey is that everyone can move at their own rhythm. Our guides are experts in managing groups, ensuring that every hiker feels supported and included. Occasionally, members of the group may propose adjustments to the itinerary. In such cases, our guide will help facilitate the decision-making process to ensure a fair and optimal outcome for all.

By joining our group tour, not only will you explore Peru’s scenic landscapes, but you’ll also meet new people and potentially forge lasting friendships. As you walk through lush valleys, ancient ruins, and stunning mountain passes, you’ll bond over shared experiences. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a novice, the journey will create unforgettable memories for all.

Altitude Sickness

Altitude sickness is a common concern for travelers heading to high-altitude destinations like Cusco, which sits at 3,400 meters (11,150 feet) above sea level. The thin air at this elevation has less oxygen, forcing your body to work harder to meet its oxygen needs. This can result in symptoms like headaches, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, dizziness, and difficulty sleeping or breathing during exercise.

To minimize the risk of altitude sickness, we recommend spending at least two days in Cusco to acclimate before starting your trek. Drinking plenty of fluids, including coca tea (a traditional remedy for altitude sickness), is essential. Avoid alcohol and caffeine as they can cause dehydration. It’s also best to refrain from taking sleeping pills, which may impair your body’s ability to breathe deeply and absorb oxygen at high altitudes.

If symptoms worsen, contact our office immediately for assistance in finding medical help. It’s essential to pace yourself and allow your body time to adjust to the altitude.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is a must for any adventure and gives you peace of mind. Travel disruptions, unexpected health issues, or cancellations can all impact your trip, and with the right insurance, you can safeguard the investment you’ve made in your journey. We can recommend a specialist to help you navigate travel insurance options, ensuring you’re covered every step of the way.

Lost Items

While exploring the magnificent landscapes of the 7-day Inca Trail, it’s easy to lose track of your personal belongings. It’s important to note that you are entirely responsible for your items during the entire trek. Be vigilant about keeping track of your belongings in vans, tents, restaurants, and other places we visit. Never leave items unattended during the hike, as they could be easily picked up by others.

Strikes

Strikes are a common occurrence in Peru and can cause disruptions in daily schedules, block roads, or delay trains. We are always prepared to handle these interruptions and ensure your tour continues as planned, though sometimes we may need to depart earlier than originally scheduled. In the unlikely event of a tour cancellation, our operations team will contact you promptly to discuss alternatives and next steps. Your safety remains our highest priority.

Tipping

Tipping is an important part of the Inca Trail tradition. While our team is paid fairly, additional tips are always appreciated. It’s important to note that tipping is not mandatory.

Typically, group members pool their tips for porters and the chef. Recommended amounts can vary, but guidelines are as follows:

  • Porter: 60 – 80 soles
  • Chef: 150 soles

Tips for the guide should be given separately from the group tip. Porters and chefs generally prefer Peruvian soles, while guides are happy with either US dollars or soles.

“Frequently Asked Questions about the Best 7-Day Inca Trail Package.”

FAQ

IS THE TREK DIFFICULT? DO I NEED TO BE IN GOOD SHAPE?

The best 7-day Inca Trail package includes the Inca Trail hike. The Inca Trail is a 45 km (26 miles) trek through the Andes in Cusco. The highest point reached is 4200 m / 13,779 ft. On the second day of the hike, we will climb two mountains. The trail is quite difficult, and you should be well prepared and in good health before starting. You need to be moderately fit and exercise regularly. As preparation, try walking 9 miles / 15 km per day or exercising in the months leading up to your hike. It’s also important to be well acclimatized to the altitude. Try to spend at least 2 or 3 days in Cusco (3350 m / 11,047 ft) before starting the trek.

WHAT IF I CAN’T COMPLETE THE TREK?

In the unlikely event that you cannot complete the 5-day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu for health reasons, we will help you reach the nearest town and assist with transport to Cusco or “Aguas Calientes,” depending on the situation. We always carry oxygen on the hike for any respiratory issues. In extreme cases, we can arrange for helicopter pickup at your cost. (Travel insurance is required). No refunds will be issued in the unlikely event that you are unable to complete the trek.

Generally, those needing help leaving the trail are taken to Ollantaytambo, and if they recover quickly, they can continue their journey by train to “Aguas Calientes” (at the trekker’s own expense) and visit Machu Picchu according to the original plan.
