Essential Information
Essential Information About the 4-Day Choquequirao Trek
Arrival in Cusco:
Welcome to the starting point of your exciting adventure: the Choquequirao trek in beautiful Cusco, Peru. When planning your trip, keep in mind that Cusco Airport only handles domestic flights. International travelers must first arrive in Lima to clear customs. Even if your connecting flight to Cusco departs the same day with the same airline, you will need to pick up and recheck your luggage in Lima. While flying remains the preferred way to reach Cusco with various airlines available, LAN Airlines typically offers the most flights, though at a slightly higher price.
Be aware that Cusco’s high altitude can sometimes cause flight delays or cancellations due to weather conditions. If you are considering other options, a scenic bus trip might be appealing, but expect a long journey of up to 20 hours from Lima. Alternatively, traveling from nearby cities like Puno or Arequipa can provide a more comfortable and relaxed experience.
About Your Luggage:
Feel free to leave any extra belongings safely at your hostel in Cusco or with us before you start your trek. Rest assured your belongings will be securely stored throughout the trip and returned to you promptly upon your return. To facilitate handling, please ensure each piece of luggage is clearly labeled for identification.
About the Altitude:
Cusco’s high altitude can present a unique challenge due to the potential risk of altitude sickness. The thinner air at this elevation can make maintaining normal oxygen levels difficult. For thorough preparation, we recommend spending at least two days acclimatizing in Cusco before venturing into the Andes. Watch out for symptoms such as headache, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, dizziness, or disturbed sleep—similar to a hangover or flu. If severe symptoms appear, contact our team immediately for medical assistance.
To stay in optimal condition, reduce caffeine and alcohol intake, as they can cause dehydration, and avoid smoking since it affects oxygen absorption. Avoid sleeping pills as they may cause shallow breathing during sleep. It is advisable to consult your doctor about altitude sickness prevention, which may include medications like acetazolamide and dexamethasone.
Weather:
Cusco’s weather is full of surprises—even during the dry season from April to October, sudden rain showers or bursts of sunshine can occur. Be sure to pack essentials such as a waterproof jacket, pants, and a poncho, and don’t forget gloves for colder or rainy days! Prepare for temperature changes by layering clothing so you can easily adjust to different conditions. A lightweight, insulated jacket is perfect to keep warm at sunset.
Included Porter Staff:
We strive to make your trekking adventure as smooth and enjoyable as possible, thanks to our excellent porters who skillfully handle your gear. During the pre-trek briefing, you will be provided with a canvas bag for your essential items for the Choquequirao Trek. Ensure each bag weighs less than 7 kg (14 lbs), including your sleeping bag and inflatable mattress for comfort. Our porters are dedicated to enhancing your trekking experience, and additional porters are available if you need help with your belongings or prefer to lighten your load.
Backpack:
Your backpack will become your indispensable companion on this journey, carrying essentials like snacks, water, sunscreen, camera, rain gear, and other must-haves. Choose one that fits comfortably with adjustable straps, as you will carry it all day. Make sure it suits your needs and is light enough to carry easily. Think of it as your loyal partner: keep it manageable.
Canvas Bag for the 4-Day Choquequirao Trek:
We provide a compact canvas bag for your trekking clothes, with a weight limit of 7 kg (15.4 lbs). Our riders will transport your bag from place to place while other horses carry the food and camping equipment. Please note that you will only have access to your canvas bag at the end of each day’s hike, as the horses and riders usually go ahead of the group.
Travel Insurance:
Consider travel insurance as your protection—a vital part of any adventure. Whether it’s a quick getaway, an essential business trip, or the vacation of your dreams, unforeseen events can occur. With travel insurance, you will be prepared to handle delays, cancellations, medical issues, or lost luggage with peace of mind. We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance before your adventure. It’s simple and affordable and ensures the protection of your travel investment. Venture into the unknown with confidence and enjoy peace of mind by choosing travel insurance today.

Yes, there are several opportunities to find bathrooms along the trail. The first facilities are managed by local communities and require a small fee. Additional bathrooms are strategically located at lunch points and designated camping zones. It’s recommended to bring toilet paper, although you can also purchase it on the trail. Don’t hesitate to ask your guide for assistance.
Who will I be traveling with?
Typically, you will join a group of hikers from diverse nationalities and ages. Although it’s impossible to confirm the exact group composition in advance due to privacy, sharing this experience with others fosters camaraderie and enriches your adventure.
Do I really need a trekking guide?
Yes, recent regulations in Peru require trekking guides for almost all trekking activities. Having a guide not only enhances safety but also makes the trek more informative and enjoyable by providing insights about the history and culture of the region. Experienced trekkers may choose to go without a guide, but having one can help navigate the trail’s challenges.
What happens if I can’t complete the Choquequirao trek?
If you can’t finish the trek due to health issues, our guide will assist you in reaching the nearest village for transport. We carry supplemental oxygen for respiratory problems and, in extreme cases, can arrange helicopter transport at your expense, provided you have travel insurance. What is the weather like for the Choquequirao Trek?
The weather is notoriously unpredictable. We suggest dressing in layers to easily adapt to changing conditions during the ascent and descent.
Can I suffer from altitude sickness during the Choquequirao Trek?
Effective acclimatization requires physical and mental preparation for altitude changes on the trek. Regular exercise such as walking, jogging, or light aerobic workouts in the weeks before your trip can significantly help your body adjust. Spending a few days acclimatizing in Cusco or the Sacred Valley, which are at lower altitudes than Choquequirao, is also recommended. This gradual adaptation usually takes 24 hours to two days for most people to feel comfortable.
Stay well hydrated to maintain adequate oxygen levels and consider drinking coca tea, a traditional remedy for altitude sickness. If you experience symptoms like headache, nausea, or dizziness, supplemental oxygen can help. Our experienced guides can recognize and manage altitude sickness, ensuring your safety and comfort so you can fully enjoy your trek without discomfort.
How many people are in each group?
Our groups have a maximum of 10 participants, with a typical size between 2 and 6 people. This focus on small, private groups ensures a more personalized trekking experience.
Is it important to hire a pack horse?
The first day’s trek can be quite strenuous, so we recommend budgeting between 70 and 100 soles if you want to rent a horse to assist you on the climb. This option can be helpful if you anticipate difficulty with the elevation gain.
