Essential Information for the 6-Day Cultural Tour in Cusco
Arrival in Cusco
Start your journey at Cusco’s airport, which handles domestic flights only. International travelers must first land in Lima, clear customs, and then fly to Cusco. Important: Even if your connection is with the same airline on the same day, you’ll need to collect and recheck your luggage in Lima.
Flying is the easiest way to reach Cusco, with airlines like LAN Airlines as a popular choice (though slightly more expensive). Due to Cusco’s high-altitude weather, flight delays or cancellations can occasionally occur. If this happens, buses are a good alternative, especially from nearby cities like Puno. Peruvian buses are comfortable and well-maintained, though a journey from Lima may take about 20 hours.
Upon arrival in Cusco, acclimatization to the altitude (3,400 meters/11,155 feet) is crucial. Take it easy for the first couple of days—stay hydrated, rest, and avoid strenuous activities. Tip: Drink coca tea, a traditional herbal remedy, to ease altitude-related symptoms.
Transfers
On arrival, look for a representative holding a sign with the SPT Travel & Tours logo at the terminal. They’ll escort you to your pre-arranged hotel. For departure, pickup will occur about 2 hours before your flight. The airport transfer typically takes 20–30 minutes, depending on traffic.
Travel Light
Leave your main luggage at the hotel and pack a small daypack with essentials like water, snacks, sunscreen, a hat, a camera, and medications. Traveling light ensures you can explore the breathtaking scenery and historic sites with ease.
Cash Tips
Having cash on hand in Cusco and Machu Picchu is highly recommended. While larger establishments accept cards, smaller shops and unexpected expenses are usually cash-only. Bring both Peruvian soles and small denominations of U.S. dollars. ATMs are accessible in main cities but scarce in remote areas.
Food Options
The tour includes breakfasts at the hotels, featuring a mix of local and international dishes like fruits, pastries, and eggs. For other meals, explore Cusco’s vibrant culinary scene. Don’t miss local specialties like ceviche, lomo saltado, and alpaca dishes.
Transportation
The tour includes well-equipped buses and panoramic trains for a comfortable and scenic experience. Buses feature air conditioning and spacious seats, while the train offers large windows for an immersive view of the stunning Peruvian countryside.
Wear Comfortable Shoes
Walking tours often involve uneven paths, staircases, and cobblestone streets. Invest in sturdy, comfortable footwear with good support to make the most of your experience without discomfort.
Your Guide
Fluent in English and Spanish, the guide will enrich your journey with in-depth knowledge of the Incan culture, history, and natural surroundings. Their passion for storytelling ensures each site is brought to life. Feel free to ask questions—they foster an inclusive group environment.
Group Dynamics
Tour groups are diverse, fostering cultural exchange. English is the primary language, encouraging unity and camaraderie. Sharing these rich experiences enhances your journey and offers new perspectives.
Altitude Tips
The reduced oxygen at higher altitudes requires careful acclimatization. Spend 1–2 days adjusting in Cusco to avoid symptoms like headaches or fatigue. Severe symptoms? Contact our office or a medical professional. Guides are trained in managing altitude sickness. Stay hydrated and pace yourself.
Weather Preparation
Cusco’s weather can be unpredictable. The dry season (April–October) often features clear skies, but rain is still possible. Dress in layers, and bring waterproof items:
- Rain jacket and pants
- Poncho
- Gloves
Being prepared ensures a comfortable and enjoyable tour, whatever the weather.
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is highly recommended to protect against unexpected trip cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost luggage. A simple process ensures financial and mental peace of mind while exploring.
Departure Guarantee
All departure dates for the 6-Day Cultural Cusco Tour are guaranteed upon booking. Once your deposit is paid, your spot is confirmed—no last-minute cancellations. Visit our website to view the latest departure dates and start planning your adventure.
