Explore the captivating Sacred Valley of the Incas on our informative and awe-inspiring tour. Departing your hotel at 7:30 a.m., we’ll embark on a journey through this stunning valley, which served as a vital source of food for the Inca civilization. Also known as the Urubamba Valley, it remains an agricultural region supplying Cusco with corn, vegetables, and more.

Our first stop is the impressive Inca ruins of Pisaq, where you’ll admire ancient architecture and explore the lively local artisan market. The tour concludes in the charming town of Ollantaytambo. Here, we’ll explore the well-preserved Inca ruins, known for their magnificent terraces and strategic urban design. This site holds historic importance as one of the few places where the Spanish conquistadors were defeated.

In the afternoon, you’ll board a comfortable two-hour train ride to Aguas Calientes, the gateway town near the iconic Machu Picchu. Enjoy a relaxing overnight stay at a 3-star hotel with amenities such as Wi-Fi, hot showers, and a private bathroom.

Located in southeastern Peru, Puerto Maldonado sits in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, just 55 kilometers (34 miles) west of Bolivia. As the main city in the region, Puerto Maldonado offers air service from both Lima and Cusco. Positioned at the confluence of the Madre de Dios and Tambopata Rivers, this vibrant tropical frontier city is bustling with activity—from gold mining and Brazil nut harvesting to logging, agriculture, and ecotourism.

Travel tip: If you are bringing luggage, feel free to leave it in our Puerto Maldonado office while you carry only a small backpack to the lodge. After a brief stop in town, we’ll begin an exciting two-hour motorized canoe ride to our jungle sanctuary. Upon arrival, enjoy a delicious welcome lunch.
As we navigate the river, keep your eyes open for an incredible array of birds such as black skimmers, southern lapwings, capped herons, jabirus, roadside hawks, kingfishers, swallows, and flycatchers.

Packing List

What to Pack for Your 6-Day Machu Picchu Amazon Adventure

Get ready for the Machu Picchu Amazon Adventure and enjoy an exciting journey through Peru’s iconic landscapes and vibrant cultures. To make the most of your experience, here’s a guide to help you pack the essentials.

Essentials for Your Trip

Express Tour to Machu Picchu

Bringing a small suitcase for your main items and a lightweight daypack (20–30L) for daily excursions is the perfect setup for this unforgettable journey.

Must-Have Items:

  • Original passport – Required for entry to historical sites and other locations.
  • Tip: Use a practical daypack to carry daily essentials.
  • Comfortable walking shoes or sneakers – A must for comfortably navigating varied terrain.
  • Long, comfortable pants and a windbreaker – Versatile clothing for different weather conditions.
  • Sweater and lightweight shirt – Layering makes it easy to adapt to temperature changes.
  • Rain jacket or poncho – Be prepared for unpredictable rain to stay dry.
  • Camera with a fully charged battery and plenty of memory – Capture the amazing moments ahead.
  • Insect repellent – Protect yourself from sandflies and other pesky insects.
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses – Vital protection against the intense high-altitude sun.
  • Personal first-aid kit – Carry any essential medications to stay prepared.
  • Water bottle (1–2 liters) – Staying hydrated is crucial during hikes.
  • Snacks – Items tend to be more expensive in Aguas Calientes, so bring some handy snacks ahead of time.

With these essentials packed, you’ll be able to focus on the breathtaking views and rich cultural experiences that await.

Travel Light with a 10-Kilo Suitcase

One of the main concerns when traveling is choosing the right luggage. The ideal suitcase has a huge impact on your comfort during the trip. Whether it’s a quick getaway or an extended exploration, lightweight luggage makes everything easier.

With airlines enforcing strict weight limits, the “10-kilo suitcase” becomes a smart choice.

Packing smart allows you to fit a surprising amount within this weight: clothing for a week, shoes, toiletries, and even a compact travel guide. Rolling clothes, using travel organizers, and wearing bulky items while in transit help you maximize space in your 10-kilo bag.

This way, you’ll have everything you need without compromise as you embark on this incredible adventure. Reserve your spot now and embrace the journey ahead!

Essential Information

Essential Information for the 6-Day Machu Picchu Amazon Adventure

Arriving in Cusco

Getting to Cusco for the 6-Day Machu Picchu Amazon Adventure is easy via the Cusco airport, which currently only serves domestic flights. If you’re arriving internationally, you’ll need to go through customs in Lima before continuing to Cusco. Even if you have a same-day connecting flight to Cusco booked with the same airline, you must collect your luggage in Lima and check it in again.

Flying is the recommended way to reach Cusco. Among the various airlines, LAN is a popular—though slightly more expensive—option. Keep in mind that delays or cancellations may occur due to high-altitude weather conditions in Cusco, which can temporarily suspend air traffic. As an alternative, buses are available and can be a viable option, especially if you’re traveling from nearby cities like Puno. Buses in Peru are generally comfortable and well-maintained, but the journey from Lima is quite long, taking approximately 20 hours.

Arrival and Departure Transfers

Upon arrival in Cusco, our team will welcome you at the airport. Look for our representative holding a whiteboard with the SPT Travel & Tours logo at the arrivals terminal. Once greeted, you’ll be escorted to your reserved hotel. For your return transfer, we’ll pick you up from your hotel two hours before your flight’s departure. The typical drive to the airport takes 20 to 30 minutes, though traffic conditions may vary. Once at the airport, make sure to check your flight status and pay any applicable airport taxes.

Storing Your Luggage

During your 6-day Machu Picchu Amazon Adventure, you can conveniently store your larger luggage at your Cusco hotel. Most hotels in the area offer secure storage, keeping your belongings safe while you explore breathtaking landscapes and ancient ruins. This allows you to travel light and carry only the essentials during your tour. It also makes navigating rugged terrain much easier, allowing you to fully enjoy the adventure without the hassle of extra baggage. Be sure to confirm your hotel’s luggage storage policy in advance for a smooth and worry-free experience.

Trust in their knowledge and passion to enrich your journey, making it as educational as it is thrilling.

About the Weather

Understanding the weather is vital when planning your Machu Picchu Amazon Adventure. The region’s climate varies due to its diverse geography. Typically, Machu Picchu has two main seasons: dry and rainy. The dry season, from April to October, features clear skies and plenty of sunshine, making it the most popular time to visit. However, nights can be quite cold, so warm clothing is advised. The rainy season, from November to March, brings frequent showers that can make trails slippery, but it also rejuvenates the lush green landscape, offering a different yet equally stunning experience.

In contrast, the Amazon features a tropical climate, with high humidity and temperatures ranging from 25°C to 35°C (77°F to 95°F) year-round. It also has distinct wet and dry seasons. The dry season, from May to October, usually sees less rainfall, making trail and river navigation easier. The wet season, from November to April, typically brings heavier rains but offers the best chance to observe diverse wildlife, as animals and birds tend to be more active.

Preparing for these climate conditions will help you get the most out of your adventure, regardless of the season. Be sure to pack appropriate clothing and gear for temperature fluctuations and potential rain.

Transportation During the Tour

Transportation logistics are a crucial part of the Machu Picchu Amazon Adventure, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable experience. For your convenience, the tour includes multiple transportation modes tailored to different stages of the journey. Many travelers opt for the panoramic train from Cusco or Ollantaytambo to reach Machu Picchu, which offers breathtaking views of the Andean landscape and the Vilcanota River. Alternatively, the multi-day Inca Trail trek provides a more adventurous and immersive experience, culminating in a rewarding sunrise view of the ancient site.

In the Amazon, riverboats are the primary mode of transportation, offering an authentic way to explore the vast waterways and remote jungle lodges. These range from small motorized canoes to larger, more comfortable boats—each designed for safe and efficient jungle travel. Transfers between destinations are meticulously coordinated to fit the tour schedule, minimizing wait times and optimizing your experience.

Whether you travel by train, plane, on foot, or by boat, our well-planned transport arrangements ensure that you can fully appreciate the natural beauty and rich history of these iconic destinations.

About the Altitude

Altitude sickness is a common concern when traveling in Peru, especially in Cusco. Higher altitudes reduce oxygen levels, making your body work harder to absorb it. To ease acclimatization, we recommend spending at least two days in Cusco before beginning any treks through the Andes. Cusco is a vibrant city with plenty to explore while you adjust.

Altitude sickness can cause symptoms similar to the flu or a hangover, such as headaches, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, and trouble sleeping or exercising. If you experience severe symptoms, please contact our office for help arranging a medical consultation.

These symptoms are usually mild. To help your body adjust, start activities gradually and stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water or coca tea—traditionally used to combat altitude sickness. The alkaloids in coca leaves help oxygenate the blood, easing symptoms. Avoid alcohol and coffee, as they increase urination and dehydration, and refrain from smoking, which impairs oxygen absorption. Lastly, avoid sleeping pills, which can slow breathing and reduce oxygen intake during sleep.

Travel Insurance

Protecting your travel investment with travel insurance is not just wise—it’s essential. Travel insurance provides coverage for unexpected events that may arise before or during your trip. Whether it’s trip cancellation, interruption, medical emergencies, or lost luggage, travel insurance can help you avoid significant financial loss. Plus, securing travel insurance is a simple process you can complete from the comfort of your home. Make it a key part of your travel checklist to ensure peace of mind as you explore the world.

Travel insurance is vital for any traveler, offering financial protection and peace of mind while exploring new destinations. With travel insurance, you can rest assured that any unforeseen event won’t derail your trip or result in major expenses.
