DETAILED ITINERARY – TOUR OF PERU
Day 1: Arrival in Lima
Arriving in Lima promises to be an exciting experience. Our team will eagerly wait for your arrival and escort you to the hotel. This day is entirely adaptable to your preferences, allowing you to relax or venture out to explore the city at your own pace. If you arrive in the morning, feel free to join us for a guided city tour in the afternoon. Please inform us of your flight details in advance.
Lima, once called the “City of Kings” during the 16th and 17th centuries, has a remarkable legacy of archaeology, history, and culture. Despite being often overlooked, Lima is still a captivating destination offering a rich variety of South American charm. As Peru’s capital and largest city, Lima is nestled in the coastal valleys of the Rímac and Lurín rivers, offering stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. Founded on January 18, 1535 by Spanish conquistadors as the “City of Kings,” Lima served as the capital of the Spanish Viceroyalty of Peru. Today, it remains a vibrant city housing one of the oldest educational institutions in the New World.
Day 2: Flight from Lima to Arequipa and City Tour
After enjoying breakfast, we head to the airport for a brief 45-minute flight to Arequipa. Upon arrival, our team will take you to our hotel. In the afternoon, get ready for a fascinating guided city tour.
This approximately 4-hour tour combines a drive and walking tour of Arequipa’s historic city center. Highlights include the Yanahuara Viewpoint, the Main Plaza, and the impressive Arequipa Cathedral, among others.
Known as the “White City,” Arequipa is the capital and largest city of the Arequipa province. The city also serves as the seat of the Constitutional Court. As the second most populous city in Peru, Arequipa is also called “Villa Hermosa de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción.”
Days 3-4: Colca Canyon Tour and Journey to Puno
We begin an unforgettable journey to the Colca Canyon and the charming town of Puno. Our day starts with a delicious breakfast at the hotel before setting off at 8:00 AM. We travel northwest of Arequipa, passing by the majestic Chachani and Machu Picchu snow-capped mountains.
Along the way, we will be in awe of the Pampa Cañahuas National Reserve, home to wildlife like vicuñas, alpacas, and llamas, as well as various species of birds, including flamingos and Andean eagles. At the Patapampa viewpoint, located 4,800 meters above sea level, enjoy views of the impressive volcanoes and snow-capped peaks. Upon reaching Chivay, savor local cuisine and choose to relax in the hot springs of La Calera (entrance not included, approximately $6 per person).
The next morning, we venture into the Colca Canyon, passing through charming villages like Yanque and Maca, where colonial churches and locals in traditional clothing greet us. Along the way, we admire pre-Inca terraces that are still used to grow Andean crops. After a scenic 2.5-hour drive, we arrive at the “Cross of the Condor” to witness the majestic condors and stunning views of the canyon. Afterward, we head back to Chivay for lunch before embarking on a 5-hour bus journey to Puno.
Days 5-6: Lake Titicaca Tour
Embark on a one-of-a-kind adventure with our tour of Lake Titicaca. Our journey begins promptly at 7:30 AM when we depart the hotel and head to the port. We’ll board a motorized boat with comfortable bus-style seats, a covered section, and a conveniently located bathroom.
Enjoy a captivating 2-hour boat ride to Taquile Island with breathtaking views of Lake Titicaca. Explore the less visited southern section, a hidden gem. Spend four hours in this serene paradise, walk along a pre-Inca trail, and discover unique flora and fauna. Relish a local lunch and immerse yourself in Taquile’s vibrant culture with its dances, textiles, and community expressions.
Next, we continue on to Amantani Island to meet the host family, selected on a rotational basis. Participate in cooking and enjoy their hospitality. The following day, we visit the floating Uros Islands, where we admire the floating houses made of totora reeds and meet the friendly locals, descendants of one of South America’s oldest ethnic groups. Opt for a traditional boat ride with local fishermen. We’ll return to Puno around 1:00 PM, leaving the rest of the afternoon free to continue exploring.
Day 7: From Puno to Cusco
Embark on an extraordinary journey from Puno to Cusco! The adventure begins at 7:00 AM as we leave the hotel for the bus station. Get ready for a scenic 10-hour bus ride filled with captivating views. Along the way, we’ll visit intriguing tourist destinations, ensuring an unforgettable travel experience.

On the third day, we are mesmerized by varied landscapes and numerous ruins. On the last day, we wake up early to witness the sunrise at Machu Picchu before the crowds arrive.
Along the route, we will explore several small ruins. First, there’s Llactapata, known for its terraces and irrigation systems. On the second day, we ascend to the Dead Woman’s Pass for impressive views of the Vilcabamba range. After the second pass, the trail winds through a cloud forest to the third pass at 3,600 meters, which features an original Inca tunnel. From there, we descend 3,200 steps to the Wiñaywayna campsite at 2,600 meters, with its stunning ruins and views.
On the last day, we arrive at Inti Punku, the Sun Gate, with breathtaking views of Machu Picchu. We then descend for 45 minutes to tour the site.

Explore the jungle with our expert local guides. On the final day, after breakfast, we will transfer you back to the Puerto Maldonado airport to continue your journey to Cusco or Lima. Located 55 kilometers west of Bolivia, Puerto Maldonado is a vibrant city serving as a gateway to the Peruvian Amazon, filled with gold mining, agriculture, and ecotourism activities.
Leave your luggage at our office and take only a small backpack to the lodge. After a brief stop in the town, enjoy a motorized canoe ride to our jungle lodge, where you’ll spot various bird species, such as black skimmers and jabiru storks. The region features diverse habitats, ranging from the Andean highlands to lush tropical forests. Join us for an unforgettable rainforest adventure!
Packing List for Your Peruvian Adventure
When preparing for your adventure to Machu Picchu and other stunning Peruvian destinations, what you pack will depend on your chosen travel style and the time of year you’re traveling. We recommend packing light to ensure easy mobility, whether you’re navigating airports or climbing stairs at charming local accommodations. While assistance is typically available, independence is key, especially at crowded places like airports and train stations. A wheeled suitcase with a lock is ideal for this trip. Aim for your main luggage to weigh around 15kg, but definitely no more than 20kg. Alternatively, a compact 45-50 liter backpack offers flexibility. For daily explorations, a smaller 30-liter backpack is perfect for essentials like water, a camera, and a jacket. Start planning with our ultimate packing guide below:

Suggested Packing List
Based on the experiences of previous travelers exploring Cusco and Machu Picchu, we present the ultimate list of essentials for a trip around Lima, Arequipa, Puno, Cusco, and the famous Machu Picchu.
- Sturdy hiking boots or walking shoes: Perfect for cobbled streets and rugged trails; high heels are not recommended due to slippery surfaces during rain.
- Reliable rain poncho: Weather changes rapidly here. Always keep a high-quality poncho in your daypack, especially from November to March.
- Warm, waterproof jacket: Essential for cold mornings and evenings between June and September. Layer warm fleece under a waterproof, wind-resistant jacket for comfort.
- High-quality sunscreen and sun hat: Protect your skin at high altitudes near the equator with regular sunscreen application.
- Mix-and-match clothes: Mornings start cold, but by midday, you’ll likely want T-shirts and shorts. Opt for items you can layer, like convertible pants.
- Functional daypack: Ideally with a hip strap for comfort during long walks and explorations.
- Reusable water bottle: Minimize plastic waste by refilling your bottle from larger containers while trekking the Sacred Valley.
- Compact first-aid kit: For minor injuries; many small towns in the Sacred Valley have pharmacies, but be sure to carry your specific prescription medications.
- Handy flashlight
- Comfortable earplugs: Help ensure restful sleep, whether in a bustling room or on the move.
- Protective cover for your backpack: A waterproof cover is essential for multi-day treks like the Inca Trail.
- Hat, scarf, and gloves: Local markets offer unique Peruvian styles if you need to purchase any.
- Sealed bags for toiletries: Prevent leaks at high altitudes by keeping toiletries in sealed plastic bags.
- Insect repellent: Especially recommended for trekking and visits to Machu Picchu.
- Top-quality camera: Ensure plenty of memory and battery life to capture the stunning vistas.
- Locks: Secure all zippers to keep your belongings safe, even in hotel rooms.
The 10-Kilogram Luggage Strategy
When planning your trip, luggage plays a crucial role in your comfort. Whether it’s for a weekend getaway or an extended vacation, choosing the right suitcase makes all the difference. Airlines often impose weight limits, popularizing the idea of a “10-kilo suitcase” for efficient packing. You might wonder what fits in a 10-kilogram bag. With smart packing techniques and conscious choices, you can achieve an efficient pack.
This bag can comfortably fit clothing, shoes, toiletries, and even a compact travel guide for a weeklong trip. Roll your clothes to optimize space, choose travel-sized toiletries, and wear heavier clothing during travel. Enjoy the freedom of traveling light without sacrificing the essentials for an unforgettable Peruvian adventure.
Essential Information: 16-Day Adventure Tour in Peru
Arrival in Cusco Upon your arrival at Cusco’s airport, our friendly representative will meet you and escort you to your hotel. Please share your flight information with us at least 14 days before your scheduled arrival. Look for a team member holding a sign that says “SUNRISE PERU TREK” just outside the airport terminal, as they cannot enter the premises.
Pre-Trek Orientation Join us the evening before your trek at 6:00 PM for a comprehensive briefing, which will be held at our office or at your accommodation. This is a great opportunity to meet your guide, ask any questions, and settle your remaining balance for the tour. It’s the perfect start to your exciting adventure!
How to Store Your Luggage We provide a safe place to store your luggage at our office, which is convenient for those embarking on the 16-day adventure tour. While on the trek, we recommend bringing only the necessary items in the duffel bags we provide. Your larger luggage can be securely stored with us or, if more convenient, at your hotel.
Ticket Modifications Unfortunately, once tickets are purchased, changes are not permitted due to Peruvian government regulations. This includes changes in travel dates or transferring tickets to another person. Tickets are non-transferable and non-refundable, so please ensure your travel plans are confirmed before purchasing tickets. We arrange this for your itinerary to be ensured and paid for, to avoid any future disappointments.
Passport Requirements Your original passport is required for the 16-day Adventure Tour, as it is essential for accessing Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail. Passport checks are conducted at these sites and when boarding trains. If you’re renewing your passport, please send us a copy of your current passport before the new one is issued, and then send us a copy of your new passport as soon as it’s available. Make sure to have an additional photocopy for any complications.
Using the Duffel Bag We’ll provide you with a duffel bag for the five-day trek, which complies with Peru’s weight limit of 7 kg (15 lbs), helping to ensure the well-being of the porters. The bags will be weighed, so any extra weight should be carried in your own backpack. Allocate 2 kg for your sleeping bag and 1 kg for a mattress. Plan to leave the rest for your personal items. Remember to pack a daypack with essentials you’ll need during the trek, such as a jacket, rain gear, camera, sunscreen, snacks, and water. A 30–40L backpack should be ideal.
Difficulty and Fitness Level Embark on this challenging yet rewarding journey, where being in good shape is crucial. The trek covers 45 km (26 miles) through the stunning Andes, reaching a maximum altitude of 13,779 feet (4200 m). We will cross two mountains on the second day. We recommend preparing by exercising regularly, such as walking 9 miles (15 km) daily, several months in advance. Allow 2 or 3 days in Cusco before starting the trek to acclimatize and avoid altitude sickness, ensuring a safe and enjoyable adventure.
Can’t Complete the Trek? While it is unlikely that health issues will prevent you from completing the trek, our team is well-equipped with oxygen supplies and can facilitate an evacuation by helicopter at an additional cost. Travel insurance is essential due to the non-refundable policy. Depending on your recovery, you can still visit Machu Picchu by train from Ollantaytambo. If you choose to discontinue the trek, immerse yourself in the rich culture and views of Peru. Your safety and comfort are our top priority, and our team is always prepared to provide support.
