Packing List: Essential Items for Your Peruvian Adventure

Are you preparing for a memorable trip to Machu Picchu and other fascinating destinations in Peru? Your packing list will depend on the type of travel you’ve chosen and the season. Try to travel light so that your luggage is manageable, especially when navigating crowded places like airports and train stations. While assistance is often available, being self-sufficient is key. A rolling suitcase with a lock is ideal for this adventure. Try to keep your main luggage around 15 kg and no more than 20 kg. A versatile 45–50-liter backpack is a great alternative, and don’t forget a smaller 30-liter daypack for essentials like water, a camera, and a jacket during your daily explorations. Here’s an ultimate packing guide to help you get started.

Travel Documents

To ensure a smooth and hassle-free experience, make sure you have the following:

  • Passport
  • Visa (if required)
  • Travel insurance policy details
  • Emergency contact information for 24/7 travel insurance assistance
  • Electronic flight tickets
  • Detailed itinerary
  • Photocopies of important documents
  • Additional passport-sized photos
  • Youth, student, or senior IDs (for discounts)
  • International driver’s license (if applicable)
  • Cash and credit cards
  • Money belt or secure travel pouch

Essential Gear

For most of our tours, travelers are expected to carry their own luggage. Typically, a compact rolling suitcase is sufficient, but optimal luggage choices vary depending on the adventure and specific destination.

  • Daypack backpack
  • Locks and keys for security
  • Personal items
  • Full first aid kit
  • Prescribed medications and personal prescriptions
  • Secure toiletry bag (ideally packed in zip-lock bags to avoid spillage due to altitude pressure)

Packing Checklist for Your Southern Peru Journey (Lima, Arequipa, Puno, Cusco, Machu Picchu)

  1. Quality Hiking Boots or Walking Shoes: Forget about high heels—sturdy footwear is a must due to uneven cobblestone streets and slippery surfaces, especially in rainy conditions.
  2. Reliable Rain Poncho: Due to Peru’s rapidly changing weather, a good-quality poncho is crucial, particularly from November to March during the rainy season.
  3. Warm & Waterproof Jacket: From June to September, nights and mornings can be quite cold. A wind-resistant jacket or a warm fleece underneath a light outer layer is necessary.
  4. Sunscreen & Sunhat: Due to altitude and proximity to the Equator, reapply sunscreen frequently to avoid sunburn. A hat will protect you further.
  5. Layered Clothing: Mornings are cold, so pack clothes you can layer, such as convertible pants for versatility in varying temperatures.
  6. Functional Daypack: A backpack with a hip strap ensures comfort during long days of walking or exploration.
  7. Reusable Water Bottle: Help reduce plastic waste in the Sacred Valley by using a refillable water bottle.
  8. First Aid Kit for Minor Injuries: While pharmacies are available, it’s advisable to carry essential medication, especially for personal prescriptions.
  9. Compact Flashlight: A pocket-sized flashlight can come in handy during excursions.
  10. Earplugs: Essential for quiet moments in noisy accommodations or during travel.
  11. Waterproof Bag Cover: A must-have for multi-day treks, like the Inca Trail, to protect your backpack from rain.
  12. Warm Accessories: The cold mornings and evenings demand a hat, scarf, and gloves—easily found at local markets in Peru.
  13. Toiletry Bag in Zip-lock Bags: Protect your toiletries from pressure-induced spillage due to the high altitude.
  14. Insect Repellent: Vital for your treks and visits to Machu Picchu, especially during the warmer months.
  15. Camera with Extra Memory & Batteries: Make sure you capture the stunning landscapes and historical moments.
  16. Locks: Secure zippers and valuables in your luggage and hotel room with these.

The 10 Kg Suitcase Wisdom

Traveling light is important, as many airlines impose strict baggage limits. The “10 kg suitcase” has become a popular choice. You’d be surprised how much you can carry with this weight if you pack strategically. You can bring everything essential for a week’s travel, including clothes, shoes, toiletries, and even a compact travel guide. Make the most of your luggage space by rolling clothes, using travel-sized toiletries, and packing bulky items in your carry-on. Efficient packing ensures a fulfilling adventure in Peru without unnecessary weight.

Essential Information: 10-Day Southern Peru Adventure

We invite you to carefully review the details of this extraordinary journey, as they address many questions about our offers and the 10-Day Southern Peru Tour Package.

Arrival in Cusco

Upon arrival at Cusco airport, our representative will give you a warm welcome and guide you to your accommodation. To ensure a smooth experience, please provide us with your flight details at least 14 days prior to your arrival. Look for our representative holding a sign reading “SUNRISE PERU TREK” outside the terminal, as they are not permitted to enter.

Pre-Trek Informational Meeting

The evening before your trek, at 6:00 PM, there is a scheduled informational meeting for our 10-day Southern Peru tour. You can choose to meet at our office or at your hotel, whichever you prefer. This session is an excellent opportunity to meet your trek guide, ask any questions or express concerns, and finalize the rest of your tour.

Luggage Storage Options

We invite you to store your luggage in our office during your adventure. We understand that travelers on the 10-day southern Peru package may have multiple bags. To make your trip more comfortable, we recommend storing only essential items in the small duffel bags we provide. Your main luggage will be stored securely until your return from this extraordinary journey. Alternatively, your hotel may also accommodate your luggage storage needs.

Can I Change My Ticket Date After Purchase?

Unfortunately, ticket dates cannot be changed once purchased, as the Peruvian government enforces strict regulations preventing modifications after the tickets are bought. Permits are non-transferable and non-refundable. Therefore, it is important to confirm your travel plans before purchasing, as per Peruvian rules, no changes can be made afterward. To avoid disappointment, ensure your itinerary is finalized before paying and obtaining permits.

Is My Original Passport Required?

Yes, your original passport is essential for the 10-day Southern Peru tour. It must match the one used during the booking process to enter Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail. Your passport will be checked at various points, including Machu Picchu, the start of the Inca Trail, and train boarding. If you have renewed your passport, please send us a copy of the old one for your permit and update us with the new one as soon as possible. We emphasize strict adherence to Peru’s documentation requirements, including passport checks at key archaeological sites. It’s a good idea to have two original copies on hand.

Health Recommendations

Prioritizing your health is crucial for fully enjoying the 10-day Southern Peru tour. Since Cusco is at high altitude, some people may experience altitude sickness. We recommend spending at least two days acclimatizing before the trek. Stay hydrated and avoid heavy, greasy meals and alcohol during this period. If you have health issues or take regular medications, consult your doctor before traveling and ensure you have all necessary medications in your hand luggage. Your well-being is essential to making your adventure memorable.

About the Duffel Bag

We will provide a duffel bag for your gear during the five-day trek, adhering to Peru’s 7 kg (15 lb) weight limit imposed to protect the health of the Inca Trail porters. Bags will be weighed before being accepted, and any excess weight must be carried in your daypack. Within the 7 kg limit, reserve space for a 2-kg sleeping bag and a 1-kg mattress, leaving about 4 kg for personal items.

Porters will carry the duffel bag, along with food and camping equipment, but will not have access to it until the end of the day. Bring essentials such as an open jacket, waterproofs, camera, sunscreen, snacks, and water in your daypack. A 30 to 40-liter backpack is recommended.

Is the Hike Challenging? Do I Need to Be Fit?

The hike is truly challenging and requires proper physical preparation. Covering 45 km (26 miles) through the Andes, with an altitude of 13,779 feet (4200 m) and two climbs on the second day, we strongly recommend regular exercise before the trek, like daily 9-mile (15 km) walks. Acclimatization is equally important; plan 2 or 3 days in Cusco (3350 m / 11,047 feet) to adjust and minimize altitude-related issues such as acute mountain sickness. Proper preparation and fitness training are essential for fully enjoying this adventure—your efforts will be highly rewarded!

What if I Cannot Complete the Trek?

Though it is rare, if you’re unable to complete the 10-day Southern Peru package, please be prepared for potential health-related contingencies. Our team is equipped with oxygen kits and can arrange for helicopter evacuation if needed, although costs will apply. Travel insurance is mandatory as no refunds are offered. If necessary, we will arrange transport to the nearest city and help you return to Cusco or “Aguas Calientes,” depending on the situation. A quick recovery may allow you to continue the journey, including reaching Machu Picchu by train from Ollantaytambo (at additional cost).

If you cannot complete the trek, there are still many cultural sites in Peru to explore. Your safety and well-being are our top priorities, so contact our team with any issues that arise during your trek. Rest assured, alternatives are always available, and we are here to support you every step of the way. Don’t let potential obstacles deter you from experiencing this exceptional journey. With adequate preparation and precautions, completing the trek will be a rewarding experience that you’ll remember for a lifetime.
